How did Elijah appear with Moses on the Mount of Transfiguration ? Yes, time travel ! Let’s decode the future of the past using the scriptures and the scriptures alone !

Elijah & Enoch died too just as Moses died. Jesus said in;

John 3:13

And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Alright ! Now let’s study how Elijah got onto the mount of transfiguration with Moses.

The story of Elijah is found in the Old Testament, in the first book of Kings chapters 17 and 18. Elijah's story begins by introducing the state of affairs for the people of Israel. They had been governed by kings for numerous years and several of these kings had been evil.  God was troubled with what the people were experiencing and he delivered his prophet, Elijah, to guide them out of corruption and suffering.

Before Elijah actually arrives in Israel, God sends a drought as he is so displeased with the people.  Elijah had been residing out in the desert where there was a river with drinking water and God had sent ravens to bring him food. Eventually, the river dries up and God instructs Elijah to go to the home of a widow who will provide him with food. When Elijah comes to the town of Zarephath, he sees the widow and asks her to get him some water and bread. She replies that she only has a small amount of flour and oil and is collecting sticks so she can cook this last portion of bread as the last meal for her son and herself. Elijah assures her that God will not allow their food to diminish until the rain returns. The widow trusts in Elijah and their food lasted until it rained again.

Sometime later, the widow's son became ill and passed away.  The widow was very troubled, believing that Elijah was the reason for this tragedy. Though Elijah was blamed by the widow, he attempted to bring the boy back to life by praying to God. In a miraculous event, God heard Elijah and answered his prayers, and brought the boy back to life. When Elijah returned the boy to his mother, the woman could recognize that Elijah was a man of God and was amazed.

The story continues as Elijah confronts the evil king, Ahab, about being the cause of problems for the people of Israel. Elijah challenges Ahab to a demonstration of his deity, Baal, versus the God of Elijah at Mount Carmel. The challenge is to offer sacrifices to their respective deities and see which starts a fire to prove their divinity. Ahab's prophets pray for hours to Baal but nothing happens.  When it is Elijah's turn he boldly drenches the altar with water to display his supreme trust in God to start a fire despite being wet. Then Elijah began to pray:

“O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.  Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

God then sent down a fire that completely engulfed the sacrament in flames and the people of Israel rejoiced with a newfound faith in God. The fire was followed by rain ending the long drought, further showing God's grace. The Israelites lost faith in Ahab and followed Elijah's guidance in trusting and recognizing God's sovereignty. Elijah then flees to the desert and something important happened, if you know what I mean. (you’ll understand soon) Elijah then passes his blessings to Elisha and departs on a fiery chariot to another place but kept communicating through letters. (please read my study paper which I linked at the start of this study to understand exactly what I’m talking about)

Let’s summarize the summary !

Elijah spoke out against King Ahab's false God worship and bad governance and spent seven years in hiding, mostly with the widow of Zarephath.

After seven years of drought, Elijah challenged Ahab and false God baal worshipers too see who’s God can bring down fire. Elijah had King Ahab bring the 450 priests of Baal and 400 priests of Asherah to Mount Carmel. There, he issued a challenge: built an altar and see which god could set it on fire. After many hours of the pagan priests trying to get a response from Baal, Elijah built his altar. To make things more interesting, Elijah covered his altar with water after he built it. After praying to God, fire came from heaven and lit Elijah’s water, even making the water burn. To top the event off, Elijah had all the priests of Baal killed.

After Elijah had shown God’s power on Mount Carmel and killed all the prophets of Baal, Ahab’s wife Jezebel planned to have him killed. Elijah fled into the desert prayed for his death. Instead, an angel appeared multiple times and gave him food. Ultimately, Elijah reached Mount Horeb, and God spoke to him, giving him new tasks and generally making it clear that he wasn’t finished with Elijah yet.

Hey hey, here we go again. Did you read my study on Moses’ Time Travel. You’re going to see a repeating pattern. Let’s dive in deep into the Word !

Before we continue, I’d like to get something out of my chest. Elijah just pulled off the impossible through his prayers to God. Upon hearing Jezebel had found out he slew 850 of her false prophets and that Jezebel is going to have his head chopped off, instead of waiting there and calling fire on Jezebel, Elijah runs away. Why ? Why didn’t Elijah just say, shut up woman and burn her ?  Sometimes we just have to pray, trust God and face our fears ! After studying the bible for quite some time, I could understand the despair and disappointment of Elijah towards the people and the rulers for not turning away from their wrongs ways, even after witnessing the miracles of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Do you see a repeating pattern here, the same way Moses was in despair and disappointed with the ungrateful people of Israel who turned away from God worshiping the golden calf, Elijah too was going through the same heartbreak. I think Elijah knew where to go. Elijah knew the scriptures well, Elijah knew where he could get some inspiration just as how Moses got it. And where does he run to ? You guessed it right ! Mount Horeb, where God passed by all his goodness before Moses and brought him to the mount of transfiguration to meet the salvation of the world, Jesus Christ our Lord !

Let’s carefully study the scriptures which brought Elijah to the Mount of Transfiguration !

1 Kings 19

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 3 And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

Commentary: Elijah knew there is a place by God from the scriptures where God speaks directly and he needed to hear from God. So he went there alone and as Moses did. Exodus 33:21-23 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: and it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: and I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”

Commentary: Elijah was in despair. He had given up. But God goes ‘uh ah, I ain’t finished with you, boy’.

5 Then as he lay and slept under the juniper tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.

Commentary: Boom ! Horeb the mountain of God. 40 days and 40 nights of fasting just as Moses. The same cave where Moses was.

9 And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Commentary: Basically that cave is a telephone booth to God. Elijah knew it through the writings of Moses.

10 So he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

Commentary: The rulers and the people turned away from God, broke God’s Abrahamic Covenant, and killed the prophets of God (those who hear from God and those who study the scriptures and preach). And in Elijah’s mind, only he is left. We need to understand the times they were living in without the new age means of communication. Their world was small. But God knows the end from the beginning and designed His redemptive plan well.

11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

Commentary: By now, I don’t have to explain what’s going on. Just as the previously discussed time travel of Moses, God passed by Elijah and brought him to a time in the future to the mount of transfiguration to meet God’s Glory who is Jesus Christ our saviour to get that boost in spirit, to get new set of instructions for the future events. Something we will discuss in my next study paper on the Two Witnesses !!

13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

Commentary: Are you realizing it ? Why is this repeated twice ? Remember in the previous study, The Lord proclaiming The Lord ? Let me try and put it in a way without confusing you. God The Father (YaHaVah) speaking in the form of God The Spirit (YahRuach) to God The Son (Yahshua) and God The Son whom God The Father proclaimed is asking the same question again to Elijah ! Isn't this magnificent !?

15 Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Commentary: This is Jesus Christ on the mount of transfiguration instructing Elijah on things which has to be done ! God gave Elijah prophecies ! God reserved 7000 people that have not worshiped Baal ! There are many more information that Elijah got from Jesus during the transfiguration which we will discuss in the next study paper !

19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” 21 So Elisha turned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and boiled their flesh, using the oxen’s equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant.

Commentary: Elijah did as instructed and after some time, God sent a chariot of fire to give him a grand exit and brought him to another place for God knows what and why ! And yes, Elijah wrote a letter to King Jehoram long after his departure ! The bible specifies that the departure of Elijah was during the reign of King Ahaziah or perhaps that of his successor, Jehoshaphat because 2 Kings recorded the departure of Elijah in chapter 2, between the account of King Ahaziah’s death in 2 Kings 1 and the reign of Jehoshaphat in 2 Kings 3. And in chapter 3, Jehoshaphat calls for a prophet, but he is told that only Elisha was present, Elisha is the prophet who succeeded Elijah. And in (2Chr. 21:4-14) Elijah sent a letter to Jehoram, who is the son of Jehoshaphat of Judah. If Elijah sent a letter to Jehoshaphat’s successor, Jehoram, then it appears that Elijah was alive even after Jehoshaphat’s reign !

In conclusion, the Lord passed by Elijah, it's a repeat of what happened to Moses when he asked God to show His glory which brought Elijah too into the future from Mount Horeb to the Mount of Transfiguration. And both Elijah and Moses conversed with Jesus Christ about the events which were about to transpire. Elijah knew what had happened on Mount Horeb through the writings of Moses a few hundred years ago. When he got depressed and tired of the people, he knew exactly where to go to get some assurance and see the Glory of God ! Just as Moses, God put Elijah by the cleft of The Rock and passed by Elijah ! I mean, think about it, two men from different points in time travelling through time to meet their savior in the future and return back to their time and live to tell about it and witness to others in the past about The Glory of God that is to come in the future ! Now that is MARVEL-ous !!

In the next study paper, we will discuss about Moses and Elijah being the Two Witnesses of the Book of Revelation with irrefutable facts and why it is very very important to know !

In the precious name of Yahshua. Ameyn !
